Sitting in burning incense upon a slab of stone, I recall the autumn at the mountain monastery;
Beneath the Twin Trees, a noble man—through how many lives has pure karma been cultivated?
Into the precious alms-bowl birds on the branch peer; within the bronze flask a sea dragon hibernates.
Do not lightly cast aside your whole body; you should consent to Duke Xie's urging to remain.
(The master had long accumulated pure practices and made an early vow to cast aside his body. Now the Chief Minister and Vice-Prefect have repeatedly and earnestly pleaded with him to stay, and only then did he consent to their request.)
