When the World-Hero's conditions for conversion came to an end, he concealed his form within the secret treasury, and only pagodas and images remain. Whether sealed in jade-fine cloth or wrapping golden bones, they are raised lofty and prominent, so that turning one's gaze or lifting one's hand all becomes a wondrous cause—this is by no means accidental. Now there is the Superior Shoucheng, who inwardly cultivates dhyāna and outwardly manages pure merit, which he has done for years. Wherever there was good and benefit, knowing it, he would not fail to do it. One day he came kindly and, speaking of superior tasks, said: 'Nothing extraordinary can match a sacred pagoda; nothing durable surpasses genuine stone.' He commanded this ignorant one to join forces in managing this great goodness. Hearing this, how could this ignorant one dare not praise it? Thereupon we jointly solicited monastics and laypeople, gathering over sixty thousand cash, and commissioned stonecutters. Four sites were crafted; within less than a year, the noble work was declared complete. Two of them, standing opposite each other at five fathoms high, were erected in the courtyard of the cloister. The next was erected at the Samantabhadra Repentance Cloister, selecting superior sites that all attained their proper fitness. Their forms were modeled on the King Aśoka [pagoda], casting all kinds of jewels, with nothing omitted. Within was placed the Wondrous Scripture of the ultimate discourse on the Vulture Peak, so there was no need to deposit further relics, which is what is called 'already containing the whole body of the Tathāgata.' Furthermore, with the True Mark as the path, there is no distinction between hard metal and fine dust. When the kalpa-fire burns empty space and the gale-winds shake the earth, how could it be destroyed? Not presuming my own poor literary skill, I record this straightforwardly here.
