Dharma Master Tong of Baoyun in Siming was a man of Silla who attained the Dharma from Luoxi in Tiantai. After he entered extinction, his bone stupa was placed to the left of the mountain gate path of King Aśoka Monastery, where it remained for many years. Later, because the monastery gate was relocated elsewhere, this site became overgrown and neglected, and the stupa accordingly fell into ruin. In the winter of the dingwei year of the Xuanhe era, Chan Master Chang, now of Mount Jiang, was abbot of King Aśoka Monastery. He relocated his bone stupa to Mount Wushi, at which time an assembly of five hundred persons escorted it together; Chan Master Rui, now of Xuefeng, and Dharma Master Wei of Baoyun were also present. The bones were luminous and lovely, and when struck they produced a clear, ringing sound. Xuefeng reflected in silence: 'If these are indeed human bones, they surely will not stop at this.' Shortly thereafter, when the bright sun had risen, there appeared among the bones what the world calls relic-gems (śarīra). Two or three among the assembly were startled and raised a clamour, and in an instant they transformed into hundreds and thousands, glittering, dazzling, and turquoise-blue like gems and pearls. Some of the people sought them, even to the point of obtaining handfuls. In the xinhai year of the Shaoxing era, when I lodged my staff at Guangli, many Chan practitioners recounted this to me, but I still doubted it. Later, when I reached Wushi to pay reverence to the Dharma Master's stupa, an old monk of the hermitage named So-and-so was able to recount the matter. It was indeed so, and he further said: 'I once sought two grains and placed them in my palm, holding them closed; after a short time I opened my hand to show them, and already seven or eight had multiplied.' Only then did I believe it. This old monk was not one to tell falsehoods. Indeed, the Dharma Master possessed an extraordinary appearance in life, and was especially revered by the former King of Wuyue, who once praised him, saying: 'An extraordinary mark of the white curl, an astonishing countenance like the full moon. Sharing the same style across a thousand leagues, we gaze up to him in reverence.' His poem also says: 'All my life I have relied on your compassionate gaze; looking southward, I heave a deep sigh.' At that time, when the Tiantai path had declined, it relied on the Master to sustain it. He transmitted it to Fazhi and Ciyun so that they could establish the house; this is what is called the lifeblood of the Tiantai school.
