The orthodox transmission of Tiantai stopped with Chan Master Jingxi as the ninth patriarch; yet after Jingxi, those who transmitted it were likewise continuous. Although their simultaneous propagation of concentration and wisdom could not rival the nine patriarchs, in severing the branch of jade and cleaving the sandalwood, they all practiced the way of Tiantai. Now Venerable Tong of Baoyun truly succeeded Jingxi, and furthermore obtained Fazhi and Ciyun to divide their teaching across Jiangnan and Zhejiang, so that this way was once again revitalised. The Master's understanding and practice were lofty and profound, and his propagation was exceedingly vigorous. According to the stone stupa inscription, the Master's writings were entirely lost and not transmitted. Yet examining the various commentaries and records of Siming, he once took up the brush to compose the Guan jing shu ji and Guangming xuan zan shi; as for the rest of his Dharma teachings, Fazhi received them all in person and recorded them in his records and subcommentaries (Ji chao). One work, the Zan shi, still survives, but is not widely circulated. How regrettable! The monastery buildings founded by the Master have already stood for two hundred and twenty-two years; after the turmoil of warfare, the ancient traces were swept away entirely. I once inquired among the elder seniors and learned that the Master had a robe-enshrining stupa preserved at the Xingfa Cloister of Jingqing. I then visited it, and indeed it was enshrined before the venerable image in the Repentance Hall. Its carvings were extraordinarily skilful, adorned with pure gold; it was hollow within and square without, about five feet high. This treasure was an old relic of Baoyun; through what circumstances did it remain behind in that monastery? If by some chance the pearl should return to Hepu, would it not serve as a banner of transmission for our school?
