Paoxi drew the hexagrams of the Changes, / intimating the Supreme Ultimate; / once divided into yin and yang, / it had already fallen into shapes and traces. / When Gautama preached the Dharma, / body and mind were obliterated in stillness; / with the three cessations and three contemplations, / the news suddenly leaked forth. / The utmost subtlety within this / is dark, obscure, silent, and still; / what need is there for verbal explanation, / what use for glosses and commentaries? / Magnificent indeed was Zhizhe! / Born endowed with preternatural brilliance, / with eight colours and double pupils, / people truly could not fathom him. / In a single meeting at Mount Nanyue, / his past lives were suddenly made clear; / awakening to the āvarta-dhāraṇī, / it was not obtained from another. / Why then the cessations and contemplations, / so profuse and manifold? / Only out of compassionate conditions, / pitying the delusions of the world, / he devised these fish-traps and snares, / like pulling a sister-in-law from drowning. / How could he anticipate that later students / would seek only on paper, / the words and letters growing so luxuriant / that the Way became increasingly eclipsed? / When the refined meaning enters the spirit, / it sheds the brush and ink like a cicada; / without departing from this very spot, / it is the single assembly on Gṛdhrakūṭa. / The Master's original vow / was thereby fulfilled; / the shrine stands tall and majestic, / his bequeathed image extraordinarily sublime. / All you gentlemen, / passing by, must show reverence.
