The essential doctrine of cessation and contemplation / flourished during the Sui; / but as the degenerate age grew uncompetitive, / it was on the verge of fading into obscurity. / Master Tong arose / from the shores of Samhan; / with sails wind-blown across ten thousand leagues, / he abandoned the raft to follow his master. / Having fully attained the Way, / the time for his return was set. / A donor of Siming, / Gu Chenghui, / gave up his residence to make a monastery, / with utmost propriety inviting and imploring him; / named Baoyun, / the golden temple rose majestic and tall. / Once the Master arrived, / students followed like shadows; / shoes filled the doorway, / and his renown reached the ends of heaven. / The fallen lineage of Mount Tiantai / was rejoined through his revival of what had waned. / He had two spiritual feet, / true lion cubs: / Ciyun and Fazhi, / who harmonised like clay ocarina and bamboo flute. / All people said of the Master / that he coiled brilliance and conceived wonder; / his roots planted firm and solid, / a single trunk with two branches, / blossoms opening into five petals, / different tracks reaching the same destination. / Down to the present, Chan and the doctrinal teachings / are thereby able to gallop side by side; / in continuing the Buddha's life-span, / the Master indeed accomplished this.
