I respectfully submit: The Way knows neither past nor present, but learning relies on ancestral transmission. A single drop branches into diverse streams, yet a thousand carriages share the same rut. His merit was supremely vast; we know the revival originated from the very root. His transmission was extraordinary; the orthodox teaching was broadly propagated between master and disciples. First we honor his true heirs, Fazhi and Ciyun, who were born in succession; we revere our ancestral master, whose virtue and bodily presence remain as if he were still here. We reverently reflect on the Great Venerable Master of Baoyun, who maintained and transmitted the doctrinal teaching and contemplation. He was the direct lineage of the Tiantai cliffs, the radiant glow of Gṛdhrakūṭa. Dividing as an inexhaustible bright lamp, he dispersed as boundlessly pervasive Dharma rain. Manifesting his form in the maritime realm, he traced his transformative activity across China. His true compassion concealed a body of wondrous virtue; like an illusion in a dream, he responded as the semblance of a monk. Spreading fragrance along the Yong River, the supreme teaching of our single school shone anew; abundantly provided along the Yin River, the fiery brilliance was proclaimed by his two sons. The wondrous mark of the white curl between his eyebrows has already been broadcast in gāthās by donors; in the exceptional region of Wushi, stūpas contend to divide his relics. We have undeservedly encountered this supreme transformation and attained sight of his portrait; yet having only longing devotion, we vainly increase our sorrowful knots. Now, as the opening of winter approaches, the anniversary of his demise is at hand. Pouring out our sincere devotion, we humbly prepare offerings of water-plants, meager though they are, to express in some small measure our commemoration of the distant past. We prostrate and pray that our ancestor accept our offering of neither difference nor non-difference, and manifest to us the ritual presence of neither coming nor not-coming. Relying on this subtle and wondrous condition, responding with harmonious vital breath, may the people be healthy and goods abundant, the seasons harmonious and the harvests plentiful. May the supreme flavor of ghee moisten spiritual natures everywhere, and may every person grease the axles of the great white ox carriage. May the fine ruts of our single tradition be observed in common across the four seas, and may the sentient and insentient alike return to the secret store. We can scarcely bear the utmost depth of our prostrations and taking of refuge. Respectfully submitted.
