The ancestral master came from Jilin and first visited Luoxi, completely mastering the Way of Tiantai. When he wished to cross the sea again, Prefect Qian adamantly detained him, and Commissioner Gu also donated his residence as a place for the master to transmit the Way and bestow instruction; therefore, the two great masters Fazhi and Ciyun emerged from this place. Today's Baoyun residence is what the local people call the bodhimaṇḍa of Ancestral Master Tong. Its alternations of decay and flourishing over time cannot be recounted in detail. Before his seat had even grown warm, Abbot Venerable Ying first collected his robe and bowl to evaluate contributions among the assembly, obtaining one million cash, and obtained another million cash from monastics and laity inside and outside. Grand Preceptor Duke Shi of Wei donated the hairpins and earrings of his lady to give to it, combining them into an Ever-Generating Treasury for Public Welfare to provide for the inexhaustible seasonal needs of construction, bells, and drums. Five years later, when constructing the Great Lecture Hall, half of the surplus was taken to assist the construction work, fulfilling his original intention. Venerable Ying was pure and upright by nature, and guided the assembly with leniency. When Baoyun was first restored, there were ambitious persons who constantly stirred up disputes over status. There were even monastic officials who relied on authority to harass him, acting like tigers and bandits. Bystanders trembled in fear, yet Ying remained calm and composed. Grand Preceptor Duke Wei truly knew of this, and at this point everyone gladly submitted. I have heard that past buddhas gave up their bodies to seek the Way, so that not even a mustard seed's breadth of land is without a buddha's body; and at the beginning of the accumulation of dust in the empty kalpa, places where grass, trees, and cliffs serve for attaining the Way and benefiting living beings were first accomplished. How could this be achieved by mere intellect or artifice? Now, only one sexagenary cycle after the residual flames at Baoyun, its atmosphere has returned to its former appearance; this is because Ying's mind and the axle of the ancient masters' vows run together without forgetting. As for the negligent and makeshift deeds of later generations, Ying was ashamed of them and would not do them. Solid as stone and supportive as the earth, his upright foundation was like this, and therefore I could not but record it. Ying was an heir of Master Yuanhui of Dongtang; Venerable Ying's name was Zongying. Recorded on the first day of the seventh month of the third year of Shaoxi by the old monk Baotan of Juzhou.
