In the xinhai year of the Shaoxi reign period, Lecturer Ying, the abbot of the mountain, built a great Dharma hall, so vast and spacious that it was almost foremost in all quarters. At that time, Chan Master Tan of the Bamboo Monastery visited this cloister, and was consequently requested to bestow a name upon it. The master answered on the spot: 'The plaque of the cloister reads "Baoyun" (Treasure Cloud). Clouds can produce rain, and rain can moisten things. This cloister is the source of the Tiantai school's revival; that the Buddhas and patriarchs have rained the Dharma rain to moisten all living beings is not a matter of a single day. You ought to name the hall "Dharma Rain" (Fayu). That is fitting.' I, Zongxiao, deeply cherish the rationale behind this name; but as the monastery has not yet had leisure to put up this plaque, and fearing that in time it would fall into oblivion, I have specifically made it known. Do not the sūtras say: 'The wondrous great cloud of merciful intent pours down the amṛta Dharma rain'? And again say: 'The unsurpassed Dharma rain rains upon the field of your body'? And again say: 'Able to rain the unsurpassed amṛta Dharma rain'? The name 'Dharma Rain' appears throughout the Mahāyāna sūtras. Now our ancestral Great Dharma Master Tong, endowed with lofty and brilliant discernment, came from Samhan; he obtained the Dharma teaching of Jingguang and caused it to flourish widely here. The two venerable ones, Siming and Tianzhu, gathering talent and harboring excellence, were able to shoulder and transmit this school. Down to the present it has been nearly two hundred years, and its way has not waned; is this not raining the Dharma rain to moisten all living beings? Long ago, Yang Wuwei once praised the Chan master Chen Zunsu, saying: 'Everywhere in the monasteries they receive the moistening; none can fathom the wind and thunder rising from the old dragon.' Now, regarding Master Tong of Baoyun, the same may be said.
