According to the pagoda inscription, the Master shaved his head and received the full precepts at fifteen. At twenty, he studied under Master Baoyun. The father of [the Master of] Siming was of the Jin clan, taboo name Jing. The dream of water like a spring symbolizes that the doctrinal teaching and contemplation have a continuous source. Mencius says: 'The gushing spring surges forth, not stopping day or night, filling every depression and then advancing, reaching the four seas. Such is having a source.' The Erya says: 'Water pouring into a stream is called a valley.' Regarding 'There is nothing in my words, etc.', in the Analects the Master said: 'Hui is of no help to me! There is nothing in my words that does not please him.' The commentary explains: 'Yan Hui silently understood all of the Master's words, so there was no benefit of drawing forth inquiry; therefore he said, "He is of no help to me."'”
