將欲正舉，捨我而誰？遂而正析斯文、旁援顯據，綽有餘刃兼整大途，教門權實、今時同昧者，於茲判矣，別理隨緣其類也。觀道所託，連代共迷者，於茲見矣，《指要》所以其立也。

"If I wish to set it straight, who is there but me?" Thereupon, he directly analyzed this text, cited evident proofs from the side, possessed ample room to spare in brandishing his blade, and together straightened out the great pathway. The provisional and ultimate of the doctrinal teachings, which contemporaries were uniformly confused about, were distinguished herein—the principle of the separate [teaching] following conditions is of this kind. That upon which the way of contemplation relies, which successive generations were collectively bewildered by, was manifested herein—this is why the Zhiyao [chao] was established.
