The Repentance Master writing only his personal name is something common to both ancient and modern times. For instance, Sengyou's preface to the Hongming [ji] says: "You, as a novice student." In the historical origin in the Commentary on the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], Zhang'an relates of himself: "Ding lingered in Yuzhang." There are also those who write only their upper character, as Junshan's preface to the Qian says: "Pu, in his early years, was among the worldly dust." The two masters were fellow students, of the same spirit and connected like branches, truly peers of equal excellence. Therefore the Stone Stūpa Inscription states: "Tong resided at Baoyun, daily setting forth the doctrinal teachings and contemplation. The two records surpassed... those of high scholarship." "Partisan" (dang) means a group. The Shiming says: "Five hundred households constitute a dang." In the Analects, Confucius said: "I have heard that the gentleman is not partisan; can the gentleman also be partisan?" The subcommentary states: "Mutually assisting and concealing faults is called dang." After Confucius answered the Minister of Crime of Chen and withdrew, the Minister of Crime bowed to the disciple Wuma Qi, stepped forward, and asked: "I have heard that the gentleman does not take sides. Now Confucius says that Duke Zhao knew propriety. Can a gentleman also be partisan?" Regarding "adopt what is superior in its principle," the preface to the Classic of Filial Piety says: "If it is reasonable and fitting, why must one seek it from others?" How great is the composition of the Zhiyao! Its literary expression and principles being upright, it truly cannot be concealed.
