On the [blank] day of the first month, beginning with dingyou, in the wuchen year, the sixth year of Tiansheng. Dharma younger brother of the same lineage, Great Master Ciyun (Zunshi) of Tianzhu in Hangzhou, respectfully dispatches his students, bearing incense and candles, fine tea from Gṛdhrakūṭa, together with vegetarian meals prepared in the cloud kitchen, offering all varieties of culinary flavors, to respectfully present them before the revered spirit of his Dharma elder brother, Great Master Fazhi of Yanqing Monastery in Siming. I respectfully reflect: the spirit was endowed by heaven with eminent virtue, coming to assist the Dharma King; when the age was on the verge of losing its thread, how he revitalized the crumbling framework! After Zhang'an had passed away and Jingxi had subsequently died, this teacher of men was born, continuing their glorious legacy. The great teaching of our single school was concentrated in these three worthy ones; the three friends yielded to his vast knowledge, and the eight talents willingly retreated into seclusion. For more than forty years, the net of teachings was widely cast: opening the room of loving-kindness and compassion, occupying the couch of the emptiness of dharmas. Generous in harboring the multitude, scrupulous in transforming the regions, thus gold and jade were prized in the marketplace, and peaches and plums made paths fragrant. Gathering like bees and longing like ants, entering the room and ascending the hall, magnificent were his disciples, abundant and all upright; they can divide into a thousand lamps, they can transform the four quarters! When wielding a pen large as a rafter, he opened the chamber of beautiful literary ornament. The profound meaning of the Ten Non-duals, I was able to understand in detail; the abstruse import of the Sixteen Subtleties, I was able to extol. As for the separate chapter of Guanyin and the ancient text of the Golden Drum, he either elucidated their obscurities or supplemented their omissions. He gushed forth our spring of meaning and untied our bag of wisdom, extending the compositions of previous enlightened ones, truly becoming the hope of later students. Alas! Who could have expected that he would suddenly follow the worldly course? Swiftly struck by impermanence, looking at the boundless expanse of the river of existence, suddenly the bridge collapsed; grieving over the vastness of the ocean of desire, suddenly the great ship was lost! Mourning the startling dream of the two pillars, entwining the desolate sorrow of the twin trees! Moreover, when worldly people are about to leave their hands and feet behind, they are entangled in pain upon their sickbeds. Only my elder brother announced his end by reversing worldly norms: crossing his legs facing west, loudly invoking the Buddha, after a long while serene and still, soaring high to the Pure Land. Since it is so, your divine eye gazes from afar, your spiritual power soars like a falcon; you must surely deign to partake of your younger brother's food, and look down upon your younger brother's composition. Alas, how sorrowful! The Odes has "Hewing the Wood"; the Changes speaks of "cutting metal"; only your younger brother toward his elder brother could truly be called of one mind, resembling the harmonizing notes of the xun and chi, or the accordant sounds of the mouth-organ and chiming stone. When there was Dharma, we deliberated together; when there were faults, we admonished each other; cutting and polishing, you broadened me so deeply! Having a beginning and having an end, only heaven has brought this low. Accidentally due to the conditions of conversion, we parted ways from then on; obstructed by the mountains of Yue, separated by the waters of Wu. Our traces lingered in dreams, and in dreams we also sought each other; days flew by like the eastern arrow, while feelings were severed like southern gold. Alas, alas! Now all is ended, how can this pain be borne? By principle, I ought immediately to leave the Vulture Peak and travel far across the shade of the mountains; but being old, I dread the spring cold, and the road is also blocked by pouring rain. Your humble younger brother has passed his sixtieth year, his teeth and age pressing upon seventy; walking and sitting rely on staff and armrest, rising and lying down are accompanied by groans. Temporarily separated from my elder brother, I subsequently see you off into the ultimate grove; I only hope for rebirth in Peaceful Nurturing, wishing to pursue and follow you forever. Alas, alas! I respectfully pray that you accept this offering.
