Second year, dingmao [error for xinmao]. The Master was thirty-two years old and was chosen to be abbot. The True Record says: 'In the xinmao year of Chunhua, he accepted an invitation to Qianfu Monastery, remaining there for four years.' In his preceptive vows for the Bao'en Cloister, he says: 'When I lived at Baoyun, I met with [my master's] parinirvāṇa. I first moved to a small cloister on the western side of Qianfu Monastery (Qianfu Monastery was renamed Chengtian Monastery, and is now Nengren Monastery; the small cloister on the western side is the present Fahua Cloister), where there were sleeping quarters but no shrine, and the disciples who came to stay were more than ten, leaving no room for more. Observing also that it was closely adjacent to the marketplace and truly unsuitable for long-term stay, I thereupon moved to the southeast corner of this city.' The preface to the Zhiyao chao says: 'When the Master presided over the teaching seat at Qianfu, disciples joyfully followed him like numerous streams converging into the ocean.'
