The sudden teaching corpus employs only two kinds of conversion doctrine: the complete and the distinct. The gradual teaching corpus fully employs all four kinds of conversion doctrine. The manifest indeterminate, pervading the four periods, likewise employs the four kinds of conversion doctrine. The secret and the indeterminate also pervade the four periods and likewise employ the four kinds of conversion doctrine. The characteristics of the sudden teaching are confined strictly to the complete; but in a broad sense, each of the preceding three teachings also has its own sudden meaning, such as attaining the state of an arhat upon [the Buddha saying] "Come, monk!" and the like. The characteristics of the gradual teaching are strictly confined to the three teachings of the Tripiṭaka, shared, and distinct; but in a broad sense, the complete teaching also has a gradual meaning, such as [the stages of] contemplation practice, semblance, partial realization, and ultimate [identity]. The secret teaching cannot be transmitted, because [the recipients] are unaware of one another. Secret mantras, being evaluated according to the four siddhāntas, can therefore be transmitted. The indeterminate teaching and indeterminate benefit are both subsumed under the preceding four periods, so there is no distinct corpus that can be pointed to.
