《百錄》云：「當嚴飾道場，香泥塗地，懸諸旛蓋，安置佛像南向，觀音像別東向。」《止觀》云：「於淨處道場，請彌陀像、觀音、勢至像，安於西方。（道場正須安觀音像東向，於觀音右肩安勢至，於左肩南向安佛像，當中更安釋迦無妨，須莊嚴畢備，然後安像。）設楊杖淨水。若便利，左右以灰塗身，澡浴清淨，著新淨衣。」《百錄》云：「行者十人已還，當西向席地，地若卑濕，置低脚床。當日日盡力供養，若不能辦，初日不可無施。」《輔行》云：「雖身口精誠，須假以福助。日日為者，彌為增上，恐力不逮聽從初日。必先課已資財，利伸傾竭。」《百錄》按《大悲經》三七日，控此經七七日，悉用齋日建首。

The Bailu says: 'One should strictly adorn the bodhimaṇḍa, smear the ground with fragrant mud, hang various banners and canopies, install an image of the Buddha facing south, and separately install an image of Avalokiteśvara facing east.' The Zhiguan says: 'In a clean bodhimaṇḍa, invoke images of Amida, Avalokiteśvara, and Mahāsthāmaprāpta, installing them in the west. (The bodhimaṇḍa properly requires installing an image of Avalokiteśvara facing east, installing Mahāsthāmaprāpta by Avalokiteśvara's right shoulder, and installing an image of the Buddha facing south by his left shoulder; there is no harm in further installing Śākyamuni in the center; the adornments must be fully complete, and only then should the images be installed.) Set out willow branches and pure water. For defecation and urination, smear the body with ash to the left and right, bathe cleanly, and put on new, clean robes.' The Bailu says: 'Practitioners, ten persons or fewer, should sit on mats facing west; if the ground is low and damp, set low-legged couches. One should make offerings with all one's might day by day; if one cannot manage it, there must not be an absence of offerings on the first day.' The Fuxing says: 'Although body and speech are sincere, they must be aided by merit. Doing so day by day is ever more superior; fearing that one's strength may not suffice, it is permitted to follow [this rule] on the first day. One must first appraise one's own wealth and extend it to total exhaustion.' The Bailu, according to the Great Compassion Sūtra, specifies three weeks (twenty-one days), and drawing upon this sūtra specifies seven weeks (forty-nine days), all initiating the practice on a fast day.
