Comply with the ritual models and do not follow your own whims; do not shy away from diligence and toil, and let every provision be made properly according to sense. These matters number by the thousands and cannot be described exhaustively; now I briefly indicate five points that can generally be put into practice: First, when intending to display a Dharma gathering, everyone in the family, old and young, must be of one mind, removing alcohol, meat, the five pungent roots, and such items. The patrons must follow the monks daily in bowing to the Buddha, confessing and repenting. Second, when it is time to feed the monks, you must attend to and serve them in person, and not sit above the monks, claiming to be the host and indulging in talking and laughing. Third, offerings before the Buddha must be double those offered to the monks; view ordinary and holy with an equal mind, making every matter meticulous. Fourth, give that which you cherish most to the Buddha and monks, and do not conceal the fine while using the coarse, which incurs the karmic retribution of frustration lifetime after lifetime. Fifth, whether in urgent or routine affairs of the bodhimaṇḍa, you must not use the monks as servants. These are fields of merit; turning them into domestic servants—how could that ever be right? What I state now will be understood by the wise. There are foolish ones who, out of concern for the dānapati families, will consider it too difficult to comply with and uphold. Household monks lack discernment, and seeing words that distinguish and select among the assembly, they will fear being held in contempt and will be unable to fully practice it. I know this text will be burned and destroyed; I pray that the Three Jewels of the ten directions and those of discernment will strive with all their strength to protect and maintain it.
