As for this syllable raṃ of the pure dharmadhātu, whether visualized or recited, it can cause the three karmas to become entirely pure, and all transgressive hindrances will be completely eradicated. It can also bring to accomplishment all supreme endeavors. Wherever one abides will become entirely pure; defiled clothing immediately becomes pure clothing; an unbathed body is equivalent to having bathed. If one uses water for purification, it is not called true purification; if one purifies with this syllable raṃ of the dharmadhātu mind, it is called the vase of ultimate purity. Just as a single grain of the elixir of immortality transmutes iron into gold, so a single syllable of the mantra transforms defilement into purity. A verse says: / 'The syllable ra is pure white in colour, / Adorned with the void dot (anusvāra)— / (When the void dot is placed above the Sanskrit syllable ra, it forms the syllable raṃ.) / Like the bright pearl in the topknot, / Placed upon the crown of the head. / The mantra is identical to the dharmadhātu; / Countless transgressions are removed. / Wherever there is contact with defilement, / One should apply this syllable-gate.' / (If external conditions are truly lacking, such that there is no water for bathing and one lacks new clean robes, one merely uses this syllable raṃ to purify. If external conditions are present, one first uses water and puts on new clean robes, and further uses this syllable raṃ to purify, so that inner and outer are both fully purified, as explained extensively in the various mantra ritual sūtras.)
