The Kāraṇḍavyūha Sūtra says: "This Six-Syllable Great Vidya is the subtle and wondrous fundamental mind of Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva. If someone recites and upholds this mantra, at the time of recitation, Tathāgatas numbering ninety Ganges rivers and bodhisattvas [as numerous as] dust motes will assemble; devas, nāgas, yakṣas, space deities, and the like will come to protect them; seven generations of their lineage will all attain liberation; and the worms within their belly will attain the stage of non-retrogressing bodhisattvas. Furthermore, if one recites it according to the Dharma, that person will obtain inexhaustible eloquence, a heap of pure wisdom, and great compassion, and day by day will come to possess the perfect merits of the six pāramitās. If the breath issuing from this person's mouth touches another person's body, whoever is touched will immediately give rise to a compassionate mind, be freed from all poisons of anger, become a non-retrogressing bodhisattva, and swiftly realize anuttarā samyaksambodhi. If one wears and holds this mantra, one is equivalent to the vajra body of a Tathāgata; if one touches another person's body with one's hand, those who are touched, as well as the sentient beings seen, will all swiftly enter the stage of a bodhisattva and will never again undergo the sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, death, and separation from loved ones. Furthermore, if the men, women, and others filling the four great continents were all to attain the stage of seventh-ground bodhisattvas, all the merits of that assembly of bodhisattvas would be no different from the merit of reciting this mantra once. If someone writes out this Six-Syllable Great Vidya Dhāraṇī, it is no different from writing out the eighty-four thousand Dharma treasuries. If someone uses heavenly gold and jewels to fashion images of Tathāgatas as numerous as dust motes, it is not equal to the merit of writing out a single syllable among these six syllables. If someone obtains this Six-Syllable Great Vidya, the poisons of greed, anger, and delusion cannot defile them. Whoever wears and holds it upon their body will likewise not be afflicted by the diseases of greed, anger, and delusion."
