Now, those who wish to recite and uphold dhāraṇī divine mantras must first take refuge in the Three Jewels, generate the great bodhicitta, and only then uphold and recite the mantras according to the Dharma. Now, according to the method of the Five-Syllable Dhāraṇī, there are four types of recitation of divine mantras: First is samādhi recitation, which means visualizing the vidyā-mantra being recited streaming light from the mouth of the yidam, entering one's own mouth, revolving clockwise, and settling in the moon disc of one's heart, like crystal beads laid upon a clear mirror; keeping this in mind while reciting is what it means. Second is vocal-mental recitation, which means visualizing the mantra syllables on the aforementioned heart-moon, producing sounds from the mouth that are neither high nor low, neither slow nor fast, reciting in this manner with the resonance of a ringing bell. Third is vajra recitation, which means entering the syllable contemplation as before, holding lips and teeth closely together, and reciting while letting the tongue move only slightly. Fourth is demon-subduing recitation, which means taking compassion within as the foundation while displaying an awe-inspiring and wrathful appearance without, reciting with furrowed brows and a stern voice. Although these four types have distinctions, they do not depart from a single thought and are non-dual. Furthermore, there are two kinds: 1. Countless recitation, which means not holding a rosary and not fixing a time or count, constantly reciting while walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. 2. Counted recitation, which means fingering a rosary and fixing a time or count, reciting hundreds or thousands according to appropriateness. If a person recites and upholds esoteric divine mantras, they must rely on a master and rely on the scriptures to receive and uphold them. Moreover, they must seek someone knowledgeable in Sanskrit phonetics to determine the syllables and phrases so that they are not corrupted or mispronounced, reciting distinctly and single-mindedly, adopting any one of the four methods of recitation, and reciting in accordance with the Dharma without interruption; then the prayed-for supreme fruition will definitely be accomplished.
