The Commentary on the Principle of Prajñā of the Mahāsukhavajrasamādhi Sūtra says: "The syllable hrīḥ comprises four syllables to form a single mantra: the syllable-gate ha means that the cause of all dharmas cannot be apprehended; the syllable-gate ra means that all dharmas are free from dust—'dust' refers to the five sense objects, also called the two kinds of grasping, subjective grasper and objective grasped; the syllable-gate ī means that sovereignty cannot be apprehended. The two dots signify the syllable aḥ; the syllable aḥ is called nirvāṇa; because of awakening to the fact that all dharmas are fundamentally unborn, both kinds of grasping are far removed, and one realizes the purity of the dharmadhātu. The syllable hrīḥ also denotes the meaning of shame: if one possesses shame and conscience, how could one commit any unwholesome deed? One is endowed with all uncontaminated wholesome dharmas; therefore, the Lotus family is also called the Dharma family. Empowered by this syllable, the waters, birds, and groves in the World of Ultimate Bliss all expound the sound of Dharma, as explained in the extensive sūtras. If someone upholds this one-syllable mantra, it can eliminate calamities, disasters, and illnesses; after their life ends, they will be born in the Land of Peace and Bliss, attaining the highest grade of the highest rebirth. This equally benefits practitioners cultivating the Avalokiteśvara Heart Mantra, and can also assist yogic practitioners cultivating the other families."
