"Doubt has four aspects: First, doubting that merely being mindful of Amitābha Buddha does not necessarily guarantee rebirth in [the Land of] Peace and Bliss. Why is this? The sūtra says: 'The way of karma is like a scale; that which is heavier pulls [one] first.' How could it be that someone who, throughout a lifetime, or for a hundred years, or for ten years, or for one month, has committed every evil, can, merely through the continuity of ten thoughts, immediately attain rebirth, immediately enter the samyaktva-niyata-rāśi, ultimately never backslide, and be forever separated from all the sufferings of the three evil destinies? If so, how can the meaning of 'that which is heavier pulls first' be believed? Furthermore, since beginningless kalpas, one has jointly created conditioned phenomena bound up with defilements, tied to the three realms; how could it be that without severing the fetters and delusions of the three realms, simply by being mindful of Amitābha Buddha for a short time, one immediately transcends the three realms? How then should the principle of binding karma be explained? As an antidote to this doubt, it speaks of 'inconceivable wisdom.'
