"Third, there is the doubt that the Buddha is truly incapable of delivering all sentient beings. Why? In past ages there have been immeasurable asaṃkhyeya-kalpas of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, and in the present world of the ten directions there are also immeasurable, boundless asaṃkhyeya-kalpas of Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. If the Buddha were truly able to deliver all sentient beings, then the three realms should have long ceased to exist. A second Buddha should not have had to generate bodhicitta again for the sake of sentient beings, completely cultivate a pure land, and embrace sentient beings. Yet there truly is a second Buddha who embraces sentient beings, and indeed there truly are immeasurable Buddhas throughout the three times and the ten directions who embrace sentient beings. Therefore we know that the Buddha is truly incapable of delivering all sentient beings. Because this doubt arises, one conceives of Amitābha Buddha as being limited. To remedy this doubt, [the sūtra] speaks of 'vast Mahāyāna wisdom.'
