"As for 'peerless, unequaled, supreme wisdom,' the wisdom of ordinary beings is false and deceptive, whereas the Buddha's wisdom is in accordance with reality. The false and the real are profoundly disparate; by principle they cannot be equal, hence it is called 'peerless.' When śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas wish to know something, they know it only upon entering absorption; upon emerging from absorption they do not know it, and their knowing is also limited. The Buddha has attained the samādhi of reality and constantly abides in deep absorption, yet universally knows and illuminates all phenomena, whether dual or non-dual; this profound Dharma has no equal, hence it is called 'unequaled.' Although bodhisattvas of the eighth stage and above have attained retribution-born samādhi whose functioning has no entering or emerging, residual impressions faintly perfumed remain, so their samādhi is not utterly pure; compared with the Buddha's wisdom, there is still something superior to it. The Buddha is complete in wisdom and eradication; he illuminates in accordance with phenomena, and because phenomena are immeasurable, his illumination is also immeasurable. Just as a large box has a large lid, it is called 'supreme.'
