Second, explaining the great and small kalpas. As the Da zhidu lun states: 'Kalpas are of three kinds: first, the small; second, the medium; and third, the great. Suppose a city forty li square, with its height equal to its breadth, filled with mustard seeds. Long-lived devas come and take away one seed every three years, continuing until the mustard seeds are exhausted: this is called a small kalpa. Or suppose a city eighty li square, with its height likewise, filled with mustard seeds; when these are taken away until exhausted as before, this is called a medium kalpa. Or suppose a city one hundred and twenty li square, with its height likewise, filled with mustard seeds; when these are taken away until exhausted as previously stated, this is only then called a great kalpa. Or suppose a stone eighty li square, with its height likewise; a long-lived deva comes every three years and brushes it once with a celestial robe weighing three zhu; brushing it unceasingly until this stone is worn away: this is called a medium kalpa.' The small stone and great stone can be understood by analogy with the medium kalpa above, so there is no need to recount them in full.
