The answer is: 'As the Nirvāṇa-sūtra states: "Take the grasses and trees of a trichiliocosm and cut them into four-inch tallies to count the heads of the fathers and mothers of the bodies received in a single kalpa, and they would still not be exhausted." Or it is said: "The mother’s milk drunk in a single kalpa is more than the water in the four great oceans." Or it is said: "The bones accumulated from bodies in a single kalpa are like Mount Vipula." Since such distant kalpas beings have undergone saṃsāra in vain, down to the present day still bearing the body of an ordinary mortal; how could one ever reflect on this without endless sorrow and lamentation?'
