Second, setting forth the name and essence of bodhi: There are three kinds of bodhi: first, the bodhi of the dharmakāya; second, the bodhi of the saṃbhogakāya; third, the bodhi of the nirmāṇakāya. As for the bodhi of the dharmakāya, it is so-called suchness, true reality, the ultimate emptiness, inherently pure, its essence free from defilement, its principle naturally authentic and not dependent on cultivation for completion; it is named the dharmakāya. The essential foundation of the Buddha path is named bodhi. As for the bodhi of the saṃbhogakāya, fully cultivating the myriad practices, it is capable of evoking the fruit of the reward Buddha; requiting the cause with the fruit, it is named the saṃbhogakāya. Completely penetrating without obstruction, it is named bodhi. As for the bodhi of the nirmāṇakāya, it refers to giving rise to function from the reward, capable of approaching the myriad capacities; it is named the nirmāṇakāya. Benefiting beings with complete penetration, it is named bodhi.
