I reply: Since it is called the Pure Land, there are no defilements. If one speaks of attachment to pleasure, that is the affliction of greed and craving; how could it be called pure? Therefore the Larger Sūtra says: 'The humans and devas of that realm, in coming and going, advancing and stopping, have no attachments in their minds.' Furthermore, the forty-eight vows state: 'If the humans and devas of the ten directions who come to my realm should give rise to thoughts of greed and possessiveness toward their bodies, may I not attain correct awakening.' The Larger Sūtra also says: 'The humans and devas of that land have neither partiality nor aversion.' What reason could there be for attachment to pleasure?
