答曰：「於此間假名人中修諸行門，前念與後念作因，穢土假名人，淨土假名人，不得決定一，不得決定異；前心、後心亦如是。何以故？若決定一則無因果，若決定異則非相續。以是義故，橫竪雖別，始終是一行者也。」

He answers: "When cultivating the various practice gates within the conventionally designated person in this world, the preceding thought acts as the cause for the subsequent thought; the conventionally designated person in the defiled land and the conventionally designated person in the Pure Land can neither be definitively identical nor definitively different. The preceding mind and subsequent mind are also like this. Why is this? If they were definitively identical, there would be no cause and effect; if they were definitively different, there would be no continuity. Because of this meaning, although distinct horizontally and vertically, from beginning to end it is a single practitioner."
