He answers: "All phenomena have myriad differences and cannot be generalized. Why? There are cases where the name is itself the phenomenon, and there are cases where the name is different from the phenomenon. As for the name being the phenomenon itself, this refers to the names of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas, the words of spell incantations, and the passages and phrases of sūtras. As an incantation formula says: 'The sun rises in the east, suddenly red, suddenly yellow; even if the incantation is performed at the hours of you and hai, the patient will still be healed.' Again, it is like someone bitten by a dog: if one cauterizes it with a tiger bone, the patient is immediately healed; or if at that time there is no bone, one rubs one's palm vigorously and calls out with one's mouth: 'Tiger, come! Tiger, come!'—and the patient is also immediately healed. Or again, someone suffers from muscle cramps in the leg: if one warms a papaya branch and applies it, the patient is immediately healed; or if there is no papaya, one warms one's hand, rubs it, and calls out: 'Papaya! Papaya!'—and the patient is also immediately healed. I myself have experienced its efficacy. Why is this? Because the name is itself the phenomenon. As for the name being different from the phenomenon, it is like pointing at the moon with a finger."
