First, relying on what was practiced by the venerable masters of India and this land: Obscured by the five veils and facing a wall, how could I dare to act on my own? It is only through traveling, investigating, and studying that I have respectfully received transmission from masters. Who are they? Namely, the Mahāyāna master of India, Tripiṭaka Master [Bodhi]ruci; next there was a venerable master who reproached and avoided fame and profit, Dharma Master Huichong; next there was a venerable master who in his usual expositions always moved holy monks to come and listen, Dharma Master Daochang; next there was a venerable master who softened his glare and lived in solitary retirement, revered by both countries, Dharma Master Tanluan; next there was a venerable master who stood preeminent in dhyāna contemplation, Chan Master Dahai; next there was a venerable master who was intelligent and upheld the precepts, the Chief Controller of Monks under the Qi dynasty. These six venerable masters were all divine mirrors of the two truths and the mainstays of the Buddha's Dharma; their aspirations and conduct were extraordinary, truly rare throughout ancient and modern times. All of them thoroughly examined the Mahāyāna, praised, and took refuge in the Pure Land, taking it as the unsurpassed essential gateway.
