Furthermore, that sūtra states: 'When a person lives in the world, in the course of a single day and night, there are eight hundred and forty million thoughts. When a single thought of evil arises, one receives an evil body; if ten thoughts think evil, one receives ten births with evil bodies; if a hundred thoughts think evil, one receives a hundred evil bodies. Calculating for a single sentient being in one lifetime, if he thinks evil for a hundred years, evil will fill the three thousand realms, and he will receive evil bodies therein. Evil phenomena being thus, good phenomena are also so: when a single thought of good arises, one receives a good body; if a hundred thoughts think good, one receives a hundred good bodies. Calculating for a single sentient being in one lifetime, if he thinks good for a hundred years, good bodies will also fill the three thousand realms.' If one can be mindful of Amitābha Buddha for ten years or five years, or up to many years, and subsequently be born in the land of Immeasurable Life, one will immediately receive the dharmakāya of the Pure Land, endless as the sands of the Ganges, inconceivable. Now, since this defiled land is short and fleeting, the retribution of lifespan does not endure; but if one is born in Amitābha’s Pure Land, the lifespan is long, enduring, and inconceivable. Therefore, the Sukhāvatīvyūha-sūtra states: 'The Buddha told Śāriputra: "Why is that Buddha named Amitābha? Śāriputra! Humans and gods of the ten directions who attain rebirth in that land have lifespans enduring for hundreds of thousands of koṭis of kalpas, equal to that of the Buddha; therefore, he is named Amitābha."' Each should weigh how great this benefit is, and all should vow to attain rebirth.
