Second, next is to distinguish the superior and inferior rebirths beings receive after death. When beings of this realm exhaust their lifespans and die, there are none who do not ride upon the twofold karma of good and evil, constantly serving the bailiffs and prison wardens of fate, and in association with delusion, craving, and affliction, receive rebirth together. From countless kalpas past, they have never been able to escape. If one can produce faith, take refuge in the Pure Land, and urge the mind to single-minded focus, then at the point of death, Amitābha Buddha together with the holy assembly of Avalokiteśvara will come with a platform of light to welcome them. The practitioner joyfully follows, joins palms and mounts the platform, and in an instant arrives there; none fail to experience joy, continuing up to attaining buddhahood. Furthermore, the karma created by all sentient beings is not identical, having three grades: superior, middling, and inferior; there are none who do not proceed to King Yama to receive judgment. If one can believe in the causes and conditions of the Buddha, vow to be born in the Pure Land, and dedicate all the actions and practices one has cultivated, then at the point of death the Buddha will come in person to welcome them, and they will not go to the King of Death.
