Question: This point is even more difficult. If that were so, then the body would not be a body of the three realms, and the karma would not be karma of the three realms. If the karma is not of the three realms, while in the Sahā [world] one is filial to parents, cultivates the three merits, and performs karma such as the sixteen contemplations and buddhānusmṛti. When such karma arises, if one has not yet attained the form-realm mind, it is the mind of innate wholesome [roots], hearing-derived wisdom, and thinking-derived wisdom of the desire realm; if one attains form-realm concentration, it is the cultivation-derived wisdom mind of the form realm. Having been born into the form realm, vowing to be reborn in the West is the mind of innate wholesome [roots], hearing-derived wisdom, and cultivation-derived wisdom of the form realm; an uncontaminated mind cannot karmically produce retribution. Since karma is subsumed under its respective realm, when karma brings about retribution, it must still be contained within the three realms. Cause and effect are certain; how could one contradict this principle and say that rebirth in the Pure Land is not a body of the three realms?
