問曰：如《維摩經》說「若菩薩欲得生淨土，當淨其心，隨其心淨即佛土淨。」此之心淨經文，乃約十地菩薩方名淨心，如何凡夫即欲生於淨土？若言得生淨土，應言己淨其心。且具縛凡夫見修諸惑紛綸競起無暫時停，今既不淨其心，如何得生淨土？

Question: As the *Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra* says: "If a bodhisattva wishes to attain rebirth in a pure land, he should purify his mind; according as his mind is purified, the Buddha land is purified." This scriptural passage on purifying the mind only applies to bodhisattvas of the tenth bhūmi to be called a pure mind; how could pṛthagjanas immediately wish to be reborn in a pure land? If you say they attain rebirth in a pure land, one should say they have already purified their mind. Moreover, for fully bound pṛthagjanas, the various afflictions of view and cultivation arise in confusion and contention without ceasing for a moment; now, since they have not purified their mind, how can they attain rebirth in a pure land?
