Question: As the Lotus Sūtra says, 'Blinded by the folly of clinging to pleasures,' and also says, 'Indulging in worldly pleasures, they lack the mind of wisdom.' Furthermore, the sacred teachings say, 'If one does not revile suffering, one has no means to joyfully seek nirvāṇa. If one does not joyfully seek nirvāṇa, one immediately delights in and clings to saṃsāra.' If that is so, being born in that pure land conflicts with the above meaning and turns into a detriment that obstructs the path. First, by indulging in worldly pleasures, one will not have a mind directed toward transcending the world. Second, lacking a mind of revulsion toward suffering, one cuts off seeking the fruit of quiescence. This being a great detriment, why should one vow to be born there?
