Question: Sūtras say, 'There are four kinds of karma: first, karma experienced in the present life; second, karma experienced in the next life; third, karma experienced in subsequent lives; and fourth, indeterminate karma. The first three are determinate karma, because they definitely induce retribution. The last one is indeterminate karma, because it may or may not induce retribution.' There are also eight kinds of karma: first, karma determinate in retribution but indeterminate in time; second, karma determinate in time but indeterminate in retribution; third, karma determinate in both time and retribution; fourth, karma indeterminate in both time and retribution. The first and third are determinate karma; the second and fourth are indeterminate karma. Sūtras state that 'the five rebellious sins are karma experienced in the next life,' which means they are karma determinate in both time and retribution. How is it that the Guan jing states, 'The sins of the five rebellious acts are extinguished, and rebirth in the Western direction is attained'?
