Question: The Lotus Sūtra says: 'Even if the entire world were full of beings like Śāriputra, exhausting their thoughts to calculate together, they could not fathom the Buddha's wisdom.' This means that pṛthagjanas and the two vehicles cannot fathom the Buddha's wisdom. Moreover, a treatise says: 'In the passage through the bhūmis, the passage through persons, and the passage through faculties, various knowledges of others' minds cannot take each other as objects.' How is it, then, that the Guan jing says: 'If one sees the Buddha's body, one sees the Buddha's mind; the Buddha's mind is great compassion'? There is a sūtra that says, 'A monkey offering honey also knew the Buddha's mind,' and another sūtra says, 'Mahāmaudgalyāyana, using his knowledge of others' minds, observed the Buddha's mind and thought of Ānanda becoming his attendant, just as the sun rising in the east shines upon the western wall.' The former sūtra says that one cannot fathom the Buddha's wisdom, while the latter sūtras say that one can observe the Buddha's mind. Since the two sūtras differ, how are they to be harmoniously explained?
