Question: According to the Fo zang jing and the various vinayas, when it comes to monks who have broken the precepts and the like, Śākyamuni Buddha restrained them with his hand, saying: 'You are not my disciples; I am not your master.' He did not permit them to step foot upon the ground of the saṅghārāma, just as a severed palm tree cannot grow again, and just as a split rock cannot be joined back together. The great ocean of the Buddha's Dharma does not tolerate the corpse of one who has broken the precepts; in all Dharma affairs, they are strictly insufficient to count toward the saṅgha quorum; they may not participate in the precinct of the pure poṣadha; the Buddha does not permit them to eat the food of the saṅgha of the ten directions; their use of offerings of faith completely constitutes a grave sin; and they are not permitted to drink even a single drop of the water of the king's land. Within this saṅgha of renunciants, within the saṅghārāma, the Buddha would not even grant them room to dwell, calling their conduct 'thieving conduct' and their dwelling 'thieving dwelling.' How much less, in the pure lands of the buddhas which are purely composed of noble ones, could such evil persons assemble together in the same place with those destined to buddhahood in one lifetime (ekajātipratibaddha)? I fear that on this principle, they certainly cannot attain rebirth.
