Faith is the mother of the ten thousand wholesome deeds; doubt is the root of the myriad evils. If one can accord with the mother and uproot the root, then the aforementioned sentient beings with obstructing conditions, though deaf, can hear again, and though benighted, can awaken again; those who have not escaped birth and death can escape birth and death; those who have not been reborn in the pure land can be reborn in the pure land. According with Śākyamuni's instruction, one goes to face Amitābha; following Amitābha's vow, one comes to assist Śākyamuni. Abiding here, one traverses the ten directions; being in the west, one enters all the mirrors. Since the two sages established this, such persons have been as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. Why not believe? Why doubt? Being able to believe oneself, and further applying skillful means so that none among the unbelieving fail to believe—this is the compassion of Master Zhizhe.
