問曰：如《觀經》云「上品上生人，生致彼土，即悟無生法忍」，此乃是八地，當知下品生者故在十解已上。若在十解已前，非但近違聖教，亦乃位太懸殊。

Question: The Contemplation Sūtra says: 'A person of the highest grade of the superior rebirth, upon arriving in that land, immediately awakens to the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas (anutpattika-dharma-kṣānti).' This is the eighth ground. One should know that those of inferior rebirth are therefore at the ten understandings and above. If they were prior to the ten understandings, not only would it directly contradict the sacred teaching, but the ranks would also be far too disparate.
