Zhang Yuanxiang was a native of Wannian County in Yongzhou. By nature pure and upright, he upheld the precepts, constantly chanted the Meditation on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life Sūtra, and took mindfulness of Amitābha Buddha as his practice. In the fifth month of the twentieth year of the Kaihuang reign era of the Sui dynasty, he fell ill. On the third day of the sixth month, at the hour of chen, he asked for food, saying: “I have observed the fast and will now depart; provide for me quickly.” Having finished eating, he purified the incense and fire and maintained correct mindfulness; thereupon he passed away. After his death, [his body] remained for two nights until he was escorted to the cemetery grove; his appearance was dignified and no different from when he was alive. Everyone marveled and praised it; it was brought about by the power of good.
