3.34

問曰：佛道冲虛，要由慧剋；涅槃幽簡，必藉定生。此則定慧為萬行之基，萬行是大道之本。今乃專崇念佛、注想西方。於此躊躇，願為解釋。

Question: The Buddha's Path is vacuous and profound, and must be attained through wisdom; nirvāṇa is subtle and unadorned, and must be generated by means of concentration. Thus concentration and wisdom are the foundation of the myriad practices, and the myriad practices are the root of the Great Path. Now you exclusively extol mindfulness of the Buddha and concentrate your thoughts on the West. Hesitating over this, I request you to explain it.
