Furthermore, since the Zhenguan reign era of the Great Tang, the year and month not recorded, eight li east of Yong'an County in Luozhou, there was a village named Banlong Village. In it lived a blind old mother whose surname was Liang. Because a master urged her to be mindful of Amitābha Buddha, the old mother, having past roots of goodness, recited the Buddha's name continuously after receiving the instruction once. After three years, both of her eyes opened. Having regained her sight, she redoubled her chanting and mindfulness. When four more years were completed, her karmic retribution in Jambudvīpa was exhausted. At the time of relinquishing her life, the entire village together saw buddhas and bodhisattvas descending with banners, pennants, and jeweled canopies to welcome her, whereupon she passed away. The entire village revered her, considering her to be extraordinary, and thus did not permit her to be buried, but together erected a stūpa for her to the west of the village. The stūpa still stands exposed by the roadside today; none of the villagers passing back and forth before the stūpa fail to pay reverence, and the entire village, young and old, all recite the Buddha's name.
