1.58

「『下品中生者，或有眾生，毀犯五戒、八戒，及具足戒。如是愚人，偷僧祇物，盜現前僧物，不淨說法，無有慚愧，以諸惡業而自莊嚴。如此罪人，以惡業故，應墮地獄，命欲終時，地獄眾火一時俱至。遇善知識，以大慈為說阿彌陀佛十力威德，廣說彼佛光明神力，亦讚戒、定、慧、解脫、解脫知見。此人聞已，除八十億劫生死之罪，地獄猛火化為清涼風，吹諸天華，華上皆有化佛、菩薩迎接，一念頃，即得往生七寶池中蓮華之內。經於六劫，蓮華乃敷，觀世音、大勢至以梵音聲安慰彼人，為說大乘甚深經典。聞此法已，應時即發無上道心。是名下品中生者。

"‘As for the middle rebirth of the lowest grade, there may be sentient beings who violate the five precepts, the eight precepts, or the complete precepts. Such foolish people steal the property of the saṅgha, steal the property of the present saṅgha, preach the Dharma with an impure mind, and lack shame and remorse, adorning themselves with various evil karmas. Such sinners, on account of their evil karma, should fall into hell. When they are about to die, the various fires of hell arrive all at once. They meet a good spiritual friend who, with great compassion, expounds for them the majestic virtues of Amitābha Buddha’s ten powers, expounds at length on that Buddha’s light and spiritual potency, and also praises precepts, samādhi, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation. When this person has heard this, the transgressions of birth and death of eighty billion kalpas are eradicated, and the raging fires of hell transform into a cool breeze that blows celestial flowers, upon each of which are transformation Buddhas and bodhisattvas coming to welcome him. In a single thought-moment, he immediately attains rebirth within a lotus flower in a pond of the seven jewels. After six kalpas have passed, the lotus flower blooms; Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta comfort that person with brahma sounds and expound profound Mahāyāna scriptures for him. Having heard this Dharma, he immediately generates the unexcelled mind of the Path. This is called the middle rebirth of the lowest grade.'
