Answer: 'If being an ordinary being means one cannot roam in the pure land, then since he is the Dharma King, how could he tread the five defilements? Although he is the Dharma King, to transform sentient beings he roams in the five defilements; and although one is an ordinary being, to make offerings to the Buddha one is born in the pure land. Furthermore, the forty-eight great vows were originally made first for all ordinary beings, and only secondarily for the noble beings of the three vehicles. Thus we know the intent of the Pure Land tradition was originally for ordinary beings, and only secondarily for noble beings. Moreover, from the ten abodes of understanding onward, one does not fear being born in evil destinies, so one may vow to be reborn in the pure land. Thus we know the profound intent of the pure land was originally for ordinary beings, not for bodhisattvas.'
