According to the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, there are two kinds of samyaktva-niyata: first, innate samyaktva-niyata; second, samyaktva-niyata achieved through cultivation. Among the five gotras, a person of the bodhisattva gotra does not rely on the five heinous crimes or the cutting off of roots of good; this is called the innately born samyaktva-niyata-rāśi. Those of the two vehicles' gotras and the indeterminate gotra can commit the five heinous crimes and cut off the roots of good; when they cut off the roots of good, they are called the mithyātva-niyata-rāśi. When that person, after reconnecting the roots of good, has not yet entered [the path], they belong to the aniyata-rāśi. When they have entered, there are three grades: those of originally superior faculties who enter immediately become samyaktva-niyata; those of middling faculties [become so] upon reaching warmth (ūṣmagata); those of inferior faculties [become so] upon reaching the peak (mūrdhan); each then becomes samyaktva-niyata. The rest belong to the indeterminate. If a person of the indeterminate gotra directs themselves straight toward the Mahāyāna and enters it, they cultivate faith for ten thousand kalpas, and only when their faith is perfected do they become samyaktva-niyata. The Awakening of Faith explains precisely this meaning, which is spoken in terms of the samyaktva-niyata-rāśi achieved through cultivation. If one of an originally bodhisattva gotra directs themselves straight toward the Mahāyāna and enters it, then upon first entering they attain non-retrogression forever and will not fall into evil destinies by force of karma. Speaking on this basis, upon entering the rank of the ten faiths one immediately attains non-retrogression, unlike the aforementioned person of indeterminate gotra. Explanations such as these are all made with reference to the defiled land.
