"‘As for the lowest rebirth of the highest grade, they also believe in cause and effect and do not slander the Mahāyāna; they merely generate the unexcelled mind of the Path, and with these merits dedicate [the roots of virtue] and aspire to be reborn in the land of Sukhāvatī. When the practitioner is about to die, Amitābha Buddha, along with Avalokiteśvara, Mahāsthāmaprāpta, and their retinue, holding a golden lotus flower, manifest five hundred Buddhas to come and welcome this person. The five hundred transformation Buddhas extend their hands simultaneously and praise him, saying: "Son of the Dharma! You are now pure and have generated the unexcelled mind of the Path; I come to welcome you." When he witnesses this, he immediately sees his own body seated upon the golden lotus flower; once seated, the flower closes. Following behind the World-Honored One, he immediately attains rebirth within a pond of the seven jewels. After one day and one night, the lotus flower opens; within seven days, he is able to see the Buddha. Although he sees the Buddha's body, his mind is not distinct regarding all the major and minor marks; after three weeks (twenty-one days), he sees them clearly. He hears all musical sounds expounding the wondrous Dharma; he wanders through the ten directions to make offerings to all Buddhas, and before the Buddhas he hears the profound Dharma. After three minor kalpas have passed, he attains the hundred doors of illumination of dharmas and dwells in Pramuditā-bhūmi. This is called the lowest rebirth of the highest grade. These are called the marks of rebirth for the upper rank, named the Fourteenth Contemplation.'
