"‘As for the highest rebirth of the lowest grade, there may be sentient beings who commit various evil karmas; although they do not slander the Vaipulya sūtras, such foolish people commit many evil deeds without shame or remorse. When about to die, they meet a good spiritual friend who praises for them the titles and names of the twelve categories of Mahāyāna scriptures. Because of hearing these sūtra names, the extremely heavy evil karma of a thousand kalpas is eradicated. The wise person further teaches them to join their palms, interlace their fingers, and invoke "Namo'mitābhāya Buddhāya." Because of invoking the Buddha's name, the transgressions of birth and death of fifty billion kalpas are eradicated. At that time, that Buddha immediately dispatches a transformation Buddha, a transformation Avalokiteśvara, and a transformation Mahāsthāmaprāpta to arrive before the practitioner, praising him: "Good son! Because you have invoked the name, your transgressions are eliminated; I come to welcome you." Having said this, the practitioner immediately sees the transformation Buddha's light permeating his room. Having seen it, he is filled with joy, immediately dies, rides upon a jeweled lotus flower, follows behind the transformation Buddha, and is reborn in a jeweled pond. After seven times seven days have passed, the lotus flower blooms. When the flower blooms, the greatly compassionate Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara emits a great light and stands before that person, expounding for him the profound twelve categories of scriptures. Having heard them, he believes and understands, and generates the unexcelled mind of the Path; after ten minor kalpas, fully equipped with the hundred doors of illumination of dharmas, he is able to enter the first bhūmi. This is called the highest rebirth of the lowest grade. Having heard the Buddha's name, the Dharma's name, and the Saṅgha's name—having heard the names of the Three Jewels—he immediately attains rebirth.'
