"‘As for the lowest rebirth of the lowest grade: there may be sentient beings who commit unwholesome karma, the five heinous crimes, and the ten non-virtues, and are fully possessed of all manner of unwholesomeness. Because of their evil karma, such foolish people ought to fall into the evil destinies and pass through many kalpas, enduring endless suffering. When such a foolish person is on the verge of death, they meet a good spiritual friend who comforts them in various ways, preaches the marvelous Dharma for them, and teaches them to engage in buddhānusmṛti. That person is oppressed by suffering and cannot practice buddhānusmṛti. The good friend tells them: "If you cannot practice buddhānusmṛti, you should invoke the Buddha of Immeasurable Life!" In this way, with a sincere mind and causing their voice not to cease, they complete ten recitations, calling, "Namo Amitābha Buddha!" Because they call the Buddha's name, with each recitation they eradicate the sins of eight billion kalpas of birth and death. After death, they see a golden lotus flower like the sun-disc standing before them; in an instant, as it were, they immediately attain rebirth in the land of Sukhāvatī. Within the lotus flower, a full twelve great kalpas pass before the lotus flower finally opens. Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta, with voices of great compassion, broadly expound for them the true mark of all phenomena and the Dharma that eradicates sins. Having heard this, they rejoice and immediately give rise to the mind of bodhi.’"
